Strava Beach
Description
The blue waters of the Corinthian Gulf come to a pebbly shore and there starts a green slope full of pines. Small fishing boats and a small church at one end complete the perfect picture and form a beautiful and cozy beach. Access to Strava is very easy, as it is located at the end of a road linked to the one leading to Lake Vouliagmeni. If you feel like walking you can follow one of the slope trails and discover small “private” beaches.
Lake Vouliagmeni
Description
At the foot of Gerania Mountain and at the point where the mountain meets the Corinthian Gulf a natural lake is formed. It was formed after a landslide and joins the sea through a narrow channel. The blue waters blend harmoniously with the green of the pine trees and that beauty gets even more complete by the sights of the ancient temple of Hera and the noble Lighthouse.
The water of the lake is naturally clean as it refreshes every eight hours from the waters of the Corinthian Gulf. Strong wind rarely blows there, so the lake is ideal for swimming, diving and other water sports. Loutraki Beach
Description
Maybe the most beautiful beach of Corinthia! Cool waters, an endless pebble beach and countless options!
The beach of Loutraki begins from the city center. Many cafes and restaurants offer coffee, drinks and snacks in comfortable sun-beds under shady umbrellas. It is ideal for every age and taste. The access is very easy, as it is located a few meters away from the bus stop, and the city has many parking spots for those who use their own vehicle. A part of the beach is accessible to people with disabilities, and there is a ramp installed, granting wheelchair access. Every year its gets awarded the blue flag.
The rest of the beach is quieter, with some parts left as nature intended and others equipped with sun-beds and umbrellas. The lovers of water sports can try windsurfing, Jet Ski and more. There is also a small water park for children, running the last few years. Towards the end of the beach you will find large beach bars that, especially on Sundays, throw big parties with music, dancing and drinks by the sea.
If you are lucky you might come across some young playful dolphins. Also you are guaranteed to enjoy a beautiful sunset. The colors that the sky takes during the sunsets are breathtaking! Depending on the time of year the sun sets at different coordinates, creating every day a special color palette that even the most talented painters would envy!
Skalosia Beach
Description
Isolated and accessible at the same time, the Skalosia beach retains its wild natural beauty with just a minimum human intervention.
You will find it if you follow a small detour, just 15 minutes from the crossroads to Lake Vouliagmeni. Most of the way there is paved and only a small piece is unpaved, but perfectly preserved, so that every vehicle can reach it.
The Cultural Association of the area has built a great stairway of sea stones, in order to keep the landscape looking natural, which connects the long pebble beach with the top of the hill above the sea. There you will find enough space to park your vehicles.
The mountain meets the sea and the sound of cicadas the splash of the waves. It is ideal for groups or couples but also families.
Sterna Beach
Description
20 minutes from the village of Perachora we meet an amazing little bay with a great view of the Corinthian Gulf. The way there is mostly paved and just the last 1 km is dirt road, but it is easy for any vehicle to cross it. The last meters of the way are more difficult to access so you would be advised to cover it on foot.
A huge rock separates the sandy beach from the open sea, creating not only a very nice visual image, but also wonderful formations on the seabed.
Besides swimming the beach is ideal for snorkeling and diving because of its incredible formations and color combinations from seaweeds and sponges.
Mylokopi Beach
Description
A slope full of green pines meets the deep blue sea on a double beach. The one part consists of dark sand and the other of lacerated plates. Along the beach the dense leaves of the pine trees provide cool shade making it ideal for camping.
The particular morphology of the seabed combined with the waters of the Corinthian Bay creates the perfect conditions for the diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
It is located just 15 minutes away from the village of Perachora but it is not accessible by conventional vehicles. If you do not own a 4x4 vehicle, you have to estimate quite a long time of walking on forest paths to get to the beach. There are no cafés or shops in the area so you will have to arrange to take with you anything you might need for your stay there (water, food, sunscreen etc.).
Agioi Theodoroi Beach
Description
The first beach of Corinthia from the east side is the one of Agioi Theodoroi. In the area of "Pefkakia" the warm and calm waters of the Saronic meet a pebble beach next to an area full of green pines. The cafes along the beach offer all the comforts for a carefree day by the sea… sun-beds, shady umbrellas, coffees, ice creams and snacks.
Lake Vouliagmeni
Description
The most special beach of Corinthia is this of Lake Vouliagmeni, also known as the "Blue Lake". Its photographs rule in many tourist guides and those who visited left feeling thrilled and promised to return again.
The rich pine forest is combined with a saltwater lake, which is connected to the sea through a narrow channel and refreshes its water from the Corinthian Gulf every eight hours. This graphic picture is also completed by fishing boats and small traditional taverns at the beach.
The beach bars offer water sports and sun-beds (along with drinks and snacks) but you can also find more isolated places to camp or high cliffs to dive from - for those who love adventure.
Loutra Oreas Elenis
Description
One of the two gulfs of Corinthia, the Saronic Gulf, is ideal for swimming, since it’s rarely affected by storms. The beach of Loutra combines the warm waters of the Saronic Gulf with a shallow sandy beach, ideal for children. It is really close to the namesake village and at a large part of it local cafes offer sun-beds, umbrellas, coffee and snacks.
Schinos
Description
A small port in the clear blue waters of the Corinthian Gulf, at the foot of Gerania, creates the ideal setting for holidays and relaxing. The Schinos beach is next to the small fishing village of Schinos, just 40 minutes away from the city of Loutraki. The way there is great, as it passes through the verdant Geraneia and the mountain villages of Perachora and Pisia; from pines and sycamore trees to olive and orange trees and finally the cool sea and the quiet pebble beach.
There, besides swimming, you have the option to eat fresh fish in the taverns of the village, find many hiking trails or just enjoy your coffee by the sea. Also at this beach runs one of the most popular beach bars and during the summer it hosts famous djs or throws concerts of Greek and foreign artists.
Korfos
Description
Just 35 klm from the Corinth Canal on the way to Epidaurus we meet the village of Korfos. There at the waters of a quiet bay on the Saronic side, a small sandy beach surrounded by olive trees and pines creates the perfect setting for a quiet holiday.
The beach is suitable for families and is located in the village, which offers visitors every comfort (stay in picturesque accommodation, food in taverns by the sea, coffee, etc.)
For the romantics, the Korfos beach looks like a small island, while the unique bottom of the sea is ideal for fishing and diving.
Flabouro Beach
Description
On the way from Loutraki to Perachora, just 10 minutes from the city of Loutraki, the full of pines road, that crosses the mountains of Gerania, makes a detour to get to a small bay in the Corinthian Gulf (a.k.a. Flabouro).
The Flabouro beach is suitable for every taste, for family swimming, for diving, for playing by the sea etc. A large part of it remains untapped and is ideal for isolation and relaxation. The rest is divided into two big sections. The first is perfectly equipped with sun-beds and umbrellas made of bamboo and is relatively quiet and ideal for families. The family restaurant located nearby serves coffee, drinks and homemade snacks.
The other part is designed for friends and fun. The beach bar there offers umbrellas, sun-beds and music. Enjoy your morning coffee, your beer in the afternoon and finish the day with a cocktail overlooking a special sunset. At most summer weekends you can attend parties with famous Greek and foreign artists or djs.
The Lighthouse – Heraion
Description
Next to Lake Vouliagmeni lies the Melagkavi cape. At the edge of that little cape stands a great lighthouse, which, in combination with the sea and the cliffs, creates a magical picture that relaxes and refreshes the visitor.
A few meters away a small harbor hosts important archaeological finds of the Geometric period, such as a temple dedicated to the goddess Hera (called Heraion), and a great history that starts from the Early Helladic period (3000 BC)
Saint Patapios Monastery
Description
In a short distance from the town of Loutraki lies an important religious place of worship, the Monastery of Saint Patapios. The monastery stands on a slope of Geraneia Mountain at a point with spectacular view of both the Corinthian and the Saronic Gulf.
The monastery is an extension of the hermitage of the Saint, which dates back to the 12th century and where, to this day, the Holy Relic of Saint Patapios is kept, a saint who is considered to be miraculous.
Thousands of people visit the monastery every year to worship the relic of the Saint, in this beautiful location which rewards the visitor with its view and its physical and spiritual beauty. The monastery houses about 40 nuns, is located at an altitude of 650 - 700 meters, at a distance of about 14 km from Loutraki and is easily accessible by car.
Prophet Ilias Monastery
Description
On the way to the Saint Patapios Monastery is the great Monastery of Prophet Ilias. It is located in a spectacular location on a hilltop in the Gerania hillside, overlooking Loutraki and the entire Corinthian Gulf.
When in the monastery, it is worth visiting the cave of the Prophet and listen to the story of the nuns who live there. It is easily accessible by car and is about 12 km from the center of Loutraki.
The Corinth Canal (Isthmus)
Description
One of the main attractions of Greece is the Isthmus, this narrow strip of land which connected the Peloponnese with Central Greece and where the canal has joined the Corinthian with the Saronic Gulf. The Corinth Canal / Isthmus used to be, from the ancient times, a strategic point for Greece since the opening would facilitate navigation and trade.
The first person who had the idea of the opening of the canal was the tyrant of Corinth Periandros, in 602 BC, who due to technical difficulties abandoned the project and instead he constructed the “diolkos”, an overland stone ramp on which they moved the ships from the one side of the isthmus to the other. Julius Caesar and Caligula studied and tried the opening again but they also failed due to lack of modern equipment. The first more serious attempt was made by Nero in 67 AD, who used thousands of workers, but after his death the project was abandoned once again. Herodes Atticus followed and also some efforts were made during the Byzantine Empire, but were also terminated for various reasons.
With the industrial revolution in the 19th century, the technological development ultimately allowed the implementation of an over-2000-year-old idea. After the opening of the Suez Canal the Greek government decided the “cut across the Isthmus”. The works began in April 1882 and after encountering many difficulties, the grand opening took place on July 25 1893.
The canal cuts across the Corinth Isthmus, in length of 6,346m. Its width at sea level is 24.6m and at the bottom of the sea 21.3m while its depth varies between 7.50 to 8m. The total volume of soil that was extracted for the construction reached 12 million cubic meters.
Today the Corinth Canal is an international marine transportation hub and serves about 12,000 ships, of all nationalities, a year. Also is the second most visited attraction in the country after the Parthenon, while there is also the possibility of sailing across it, arranged by tourist sailing boats of the area. At the Corinth Canal have taken place, and continue to take place, many sporting events, such as bungee jumping, swimming across the canal, stand up paddling (SUP), while large companies have implemented breathtaking activities such as flying with a small plane into the canal and jumping over the canal with a motorcycle at its highest point!
Roman Villa Loutraki
Description
At a distance of 6 km from the center of Loutraki archaeological excavations have brought to light a luxurious Roman villa and also a large bath complex in the Katounistra region. All these findings demonstrate the importance of the Isthmus region in antiquity but also the development of thermalism in the area.
This area, because of its location, used to be an important commercial and urban center during the first Christian centuries - our excavations have shown that the villa had been used since the 6th century AD.
It is believed that the bath complex had been used more publicly, not only for the villa owners’ needs, due to its large surface; a fact that proves the development of thermalism in Loutraki and in the wider region of the Isthmus from the ancient times.
All the above combined with the ruins of a temple of the classical period, which could be used as an Asclepion (health institution of the time, named after Asclepius-God of Medicine) and other evidence found in the city center, offer evidence that the area was also popular at that time. The city, in Roman times, was reported as "Therme". The area is still under excavation.
Ancient Corinth
Description
Ancient Corinth was an important city-state of ancient Greece. Ancient Corinth controlled the pivotal position of the Canal of Corinth and was the most important commercial hub of the ancient world, until it was threatened by Athens. Corinth was considered the richest city in the ancient world. The village of Ancient Corinth is now quite touristic and next to it stand the ruins of the ancient city and of the temples and the archaeological museum, which attract many visitors every year.
Today you will find in that area the archaic temple of Apollo, which was built in 530 BC with monolithic Doric columns, of which seven remain upright in a prominent position over the market ruins. The market is formed by a series of uniform establishments, each of which was divided into two rooms. Accessible is also the Conservatory, which was built in the 1st century next to findings showing that there used to be an ancient theater with a capacity of 18000 seats.
Finally there is the Asclepion which is carved, for the most part, on the rocks. In the area you will also see the Acrocorinth, the castle of Corinth, where there used to be temples dedicated to Aphrodite, Dimitra and Kori. The castle was in continuous use from ancient times until recently. Thus the buildings have been reconstructed several times, while the building material has been used several times to meet each time’s requirements.
Lake Stymphalia
Description
Stymphalia is a swampy lake of mountain Corinthia, located on a plateau, at an altitude of 600 meters, between the mountains Kyllini and Oligyrtos and is also the most southern mountain wetland in Balkan. It retains water during the winter and it extends up to 3.5 square kilometers.
Lake Stymphalia is linked to the sixth labor of Hercules, who faced the Stymphalian Birds there. Hercules managed to lure the birds to emerge from the dense flora of the lake, thanks to the rattle of copper, given to him by the goddess Athena. Then Hercules hit each bird with his arrows.
The lake is a particular wetland with significant biodiversity integrated in the European Network of Protected Areas NATURA 2000. It is an ideal paradise for the 133 species of protected, threatened and endangered birds and it is a haven for many migratory birds.
Of particular biological interest is an endemic species of fish that lives only in this lake, Phoxinellusstymfalicius, which manages to survive the periods of drought of the lake.
Today in this area you can find the Stymphalia Environmental Museum, which is located on the slope of one of the hills surrounding the lake. There you will find information about the local environment and its importance, and will see how the local environment has affected the development of human activity, and particularly of traditional professions. Finally you can see the open aquarium with live fish and plants of the area.
Lake Doxa – Feneos
Description
Lake Doxa is an artificial lake 900 meters above sea level which is located in Ancient Feneos in Corinthia. The lake and the village of Feneos represent a beautiful area located on a plateau between Ziria and Helmos Mountain. The high snow-capped peaks with the dense forests of the region are a unique mountain wetland. In the center of the lake there is a peninsula, at the end of which stands the picturesque chapel of Saint Fanourios.
Feneos was the largest and most important cities of Arcadia and today it administratively belongs to the prefecture of Corinthia. The plain was crossed by Olbios and Doxa rivers but even when those rivers would burst with water the plain would not flood, since the waters found an outlet in sinks. According to legend, these sinks had been dug by Hercules, who wanted to clear the waters that stagnated there.
Doxa is considered one of the most beautiful mountain lakes of Greece, as the colors of the forest reflect on the lake’s clear water and create a unique landscape which reminds you of the Alps.
Kechries – Ancient Harbor
Description
The ancient port of Kechries was the heaven of ancient Corinth and a very important commercial and military port of ancient Greece. In this area, pioneering port facilities and warehouses were used, as well as shops and public buildings. Many of the findings of the area are stored in Isthmia museum.
Today at Kechries lays a large beach, by which you will find comfortable accommodation and good food and also you can enjoy your coffee by the blue waters.
Archaelogical Site and Museum Of Isthmia
Description
The area of the Isthmus was extremely important for the ancient Greeks as it was a nodal point which connected the Peloponnese with Central Greece and Athens while separating the Corinthian and the Saronic Gulf. This helped the development of the area and its facilities.
Today at the archaeological site of Isthmia you can visit several findings and also the museum.
Some of them are: the Temple of Poseidon, which was built in the 7th century BC, the ancient theater, which is not fully preserved because many of its materials were later used in the medieval fortress and the ancient stadium which is located about 300 meters south of the site.
The museum is located in the archaeological site and there you can see findings of great importance, such as a wooden door from the Temple of Isis in Kechries and glass panels of colored glass depicting birds, fish, plants and human figures which are considered a precursor of the European stained glass.
Sousaki Volcano
Description
On the northeast side of Corinthia, near the village of Agioi Theodoroi, is an important geological discovery, Sousaki volcano. It belongs to the same volcanic arc as the volcanoes of Methana, Aegina, Poros, Nisyros and Santorini. Its last eruption happened 2.5 million years ago but even today it presents some post-volcanic activity emitting hot gases.
The feature that makes it special is that it has no crater but it consists of two gorges and there are dozens of adits from which hot gases diffuse into the atmosphere. The impressive volcanic rocks take several curious formations and the smell of sulfur is strong. The gorges, depending on the season, have enough running water which is supplied from the nearby springs.
The volcano is located 180 meters above sea level and gives the visitor a unique hiking experience. At first you enter a steep, dry landscape but later you encounter (not all year round) active water springs and growing flora.
The hiking route inside the volcano is easy and the orientation implicit. The access to the start of the volcano is difficult, since the quality of the road is not good and especially in the end there is a dirt road, which, at some places, might be destroyed by the rain.
Ancient Sikyon
Description
Ancient Sikyon was the most important artistic center in the Peloponnese where the art of painting developed in antiquity.
It was home to the renowned sculptor Lysippos and the center where the art of painting developed in antiquity.
In the archaeological site one can admire the imposing theater, the gymnasium, the bouleuterion, as well as the 6th c. B.C temple which was turned into a basilica during the Christian era. Also impressive are the roman baths, which are today housed inside the Archaeological Museum.
