Trekking in Loutraki and Corinth area

Mount Geraneia, one of the most outstanding mountain ranges of Peloponesse, is embraced by three gulfs – the Saronian Gulf, the Corinthian Gulf and the Gulf of Alkyonides.

Moreover, it’s gifted with one beautiful lakes, Vouliagmeni. From Makriplagi, the highest peak of Geraneia – 1.369m long – the view is absolutely awesome! The mountain forms a 37 km long natural barrier between Central Greece and Peloponesse.

What’s more, Mount Geraneia is enlisted in Natura 2000, the European Net of regions under protection, thanks to its rich fauna and vegetation. There have been traced and recorded approximately 950 different species of plants (lush vegetation, fir & plane trees, oak and myrtle trees, pine trees) and wild animals (jackals, foxes, cranes, eagles, hares ). Spread around the hills, you may find lots of natural springs with crystal water, while, scattered among the pine forest, you can trace one of the numerous monasteries and churches (Agia Paraskevi, Osios Patapios, Agia Marina, Panagia Prathi, Agios Gerasimos).

Examples of routes: Trekking in Loutraki & Corinth area

Coastal Route (Sterna – Vouliagmeni Lake)

On the north side of Gerania, overlooking the Corinthian Gulf, we will walk along the unique seaside path.

The path that starts from the beach of Sterna and ends at the Lighthouse of Heraion, going through pine trees that smell like pitch, cedars, capers and wild olive trees embraced by ivies.

During the hiking, we will gaze, over the sea, at the arch at Sapounthi, discover hidden beaches while admiring the wonderful formations of the rocks created by the force of the waves. If we are lucky we will find fossilized shells.

The landscapes keep alternating until we reach the Lighthouse of Heraion and the archaeological site of the temple of Hera.

Next we will follow the asphalt road to Lake Vouliagmeni. On the way there we will see the ancient Krini (spring) and the area of ​​the ancient aqueduct, a miracle of engineering for its time.

Then we will swim in Lake Vouliagmeni, a UNESCO site, known for its natural beauty, where in its turquoise waters we can see the reflexion of Mount Gerania.

Also available is having lunch at a local restaurant.

Perachora Village – Lake Vouliagmeni Path

At the western end of the mountain of Gerania there is a path with a wonderful view waiting to be explored.

It starts from the village of Perachora and heads west towards Lake Vouliagmeni and the archaeological site of Heraion.

Almost all the way north and south of Gerania we see the Corinthian Gulf and also the Alkyonides islands. Halfway down the road, we come across a unique view of Lake Vouliagmeni, the channel that connects it with the sea and the lighthouse of Heraion.

The route goes through forests of pines of various ages as well as olive groves. The visitor has the opportunity to admire the local flora while during the spring the colors create a wonderful setting.

The path is characterized as easy but good physical condition is required.

Its length is about 10.5 km and it takes 3.5 – 4.5 hours to finish it.

The altitude differences are small with a maximum height of 460m and its end being right by the sea.

Upon finishing the path we can visit the archaeological site of Heraion and the Melagavi Lighthouse.

Trekking in Vouraikos Gorge – Cog Railway

We take the train going up, we walk going down.

The descent from Kalavrita to Diakofto, following the rails of the Cog Railway, requires about 6 hours hiking, while the same ascent about 7-8 hours. This route is a part of the European path E4.

We begin our descent from Kato Zachlorou, estimating that we will need about 4 hours to Diakofto.

Although the trip with the Cog Railway gives us a taste of the beauty of the route, not for a moment do we cease to enjoy the alternating landscapes. Walking on the train rails and looking right and left, every new turn we take surprises us, as we have either tremendous waterfalls unfolding before us, or tunnels, which we have to enter and exit running to avoid any … “close contact” with the train, abandoned stone houses with a telegraph that turn us back in time, disoriented livestock, rocks carved by the gushing water and shaped into forms that look impossible to the human brain, and the most enjoyable of all, the amazing aerial bridges! This feeling when you have nothing under your feet and that point when you wish the Cog Railway wasn’t coming towards you – or in our case the opposite, just to make it even more fun.

Diving is one of the most magical sports to choose from, especially in the area of Corinthia, which is fortunate to be surrounded by sea.

The bottom is a world full of surprises! Another life unfolds, impressive, serene, lovely. Daily from April till the end of November, boat diving sessions take place in the blue waters of the Saronic and the Corinthian Gulf.

The dive boat is 9 meters long, provides transportation to 12 divers with their equipment and offers fun combining diving trips, swimming, and BBQ on board!

Technical Diving

Technical diving is the most extreme form of scuba diving. It includes dives deeper than 40 meters, cave diving, wreck diving, and diving with the use of special equipment, such as Full Face Mask, Sidemount etc.

Technical diving is characterized as “diving for the few”. It requires great specialization in aspects of equipment and theoretical training and also proper thinking and discipline on behalf of the divers.

There are many training choices in technical diving, in all PADI levels, Tec Deep, Tec TRIMIX, Full Gas Blender, as well as in the specialties Tech Sidemount Diver and Full Face Mask Diver, with all technical diving equipment included in the school fee.

In the Corinthian Gulf takes place boat technical diving of any level, deep TRIMIX diving, wall diving and diving in an underwater canyon of unique beauty, Tech diving in corals and also wreck diving and cave diving.

Support is provided in diving equipment issues, decompression software, diving organization and anything else you need to ensure the quality of your technical diving.

Sousaki Volcano Trekking Tour

At Sousaki, near Agioi Theodori of Corinthia, lies hidden a little treasure that only a few know about. It is a volcano that belongs to the same volcanic arc as the volcanoes of Methana, Aegina, Poros, Nisyros and Santorini.

Live with us the unique experience of taking a tour of the gorges of that volcano.

It is located at an altitude of 180 m, and although its last volcanic activity occurred 2.7 million years ago, there is still intense post-volcanic activity with emission of hot gases, mostly carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen sulfide.

See closely the various adits, where sulfur mining used to take place. In many spots the ground is warm while in others all it takes is digging with the finger a few centimeters into the ground to feel the hot gases emerging from the slopes of the volcano. In the vents of the many adits (natural and artificial) existing in the area, often dead insects and birds are found, killed by poison gas. Depending on the season water may be running in the gorges.

Fonissa Gorge

Canyoning Corinthia Greece:

“Fonissa” is a stream that in its course a deep rupture is formed, from Vrysoules village to Loutro, in the municipality of Xylokastro. In ancient times this stream was the boundary of ancient Pellini and was called “Krios”(Aries), a fitting name because of its vigorousness. Equally fitting is its current name, “Fonissa”(murderess), as it is particularly dangerous for someone to be in its narrow opening when water is running.

In order to enter “Fonissa” we follow the road from Kato Loutro to Korfiotissa. Although this is a small gorge it makes up with its specialness and its imposing presence. Hidden and surprisingly beautiful, it unfolds before us on a course of about 10 km. It is formed when the river starting from Korfiotissa gets interrupted by a large limestone hill for about 1.5 km before reaching the Corinthian Gulf. While crossing the walls get very close, creating cave features, thus giving peculiarity and character to the landscape. The typical width is 2-3 meters and the walls are of solid limestone.

The Fonissa Gorge first got secured in 1984 by Spyros Apostolopoulos and Aris Theodoropoulos and it has been renewed several times by different groups, so it gets visited a lot. Water flows during the spring and shortly after the entrance we come across the first dark narrow point. For nearly a kilometer (800 meters) the light is really scarce for the visitor and few are the open spots. In the canyon we find five technical descents, with the largest one being 18 meters high, and just before the exit we see the light again. Even though equipment is required for the entire course, we can walk it all the way.

“Fonissa” has 5 technical descents, an altitude difference of 250 meters and a length of 1.5 km while the crossing time for a 4-member group is about 3 hours.

The canyon can be visited by 2 ways:

1st way, for experienced hikers-climbers-adults

Technical Characteristics

Track: The descent of the canyon is done by using mountaineering equipment, is aimed to adults with experience.

The Canyon during the summer months does not present too much difficulty but we should emphasise that the descent is addressed to experienced hikers-climbers.

Total length: approx. 1.5 km

Duration: approximately 3 hours descent.

2nd way, for non-experienced hikers and children over 16

A part of the canyon, starting from the end and moving backwards, is accessible from not so experienced hikers without any use of mountaineering equipment. This part of the track is of exceptional beauty, it passes through a cave and gives the possibility to not so experienced hikers to enjoy the real beauty of this canyon.

Duration: approx. 1 hour moving at a moderate pace.

Tarsos Climbing Field – Corinth Greece

Tarsos is a new climbing field located near the village of Kato Tarsos on the plateau of Feneos, Corinthia. The area is also known as the Virgin of the Rocks, named after the impressive chapel built on the hill.

Starting the route from the village of Kato Tarsos a unique natural beauty awaits, with the impressive view of the mountain of Great Zireia. Arriving at the climbing area, you will find that a beautiful location, with large plane and fir trees, cold running waters and lovely green meadows.

A cluster of vertical rocks, almost smooth, with vertical irregular slits, awaits to remind you a little of the magic of the most famous rocks of Greece “Meteora”, as, due to the shape and the composition of the rocks, many call it “Meteora of the Peloponnese”.

The routes are relatively new and well secured. They are densely secured with large plugs with the use of resins. As the routes are still new the use of a helmet is necessary.

While gazing at the big rocks, a big slit will catch your eye. It is a cave, which, during the German Occupation, was used as a refuge by English paratroopers, who functioned as liaisons with the Greek rebels.

There are five fields in the area with enough tracks for every taste. In the photos you will see some of them.

Frygani Climbing Field

Corinthia is a blessed place, surrounded by mountains and sea, plains and lakes, canyons and scenic paths in nature that attract anyone who wants to get their adrenaline pumping, by doing many kinds of activities.

Among the many choices you have, climbing in mountainous Corinthia is a fact! Every enthusiastic climber will find the right location to get to know the satisfaction of climbing and the thrill of the top, and one of them is the “Frygani” climbing field, in beautiful Kefalari of the mountainous part of Corinthia.

Frygani is an extensive limestone hillside with conglomerate inclusions and is located at the eastern foothills of Mount Ziria at the beginning of the plateau of Lake Stymphalia. It reminds of Meteora very much, but the rock is much stronger and richer in features such as pockets, holes and flops and with the significant difference that here the routes are densely secured.

The environment is idyllic among vines, trees and vivid colors, especially in autumn. It is about 120 km from Athens, via the highway, and it is a great choice for a one-day visit.

It is also an ideal starting point, or even a finishing point, to explore the climbing fields of the Peloponnese. Climbing in the “Frygani” field is ideal any time of day and any time of year.
